Something About Railway History of Bhusawal
Until the opening of the Railways Bhusawal was a petty village.  However with the opening of the Railways, Bhusawal with Divisional Headquarters (Bhusawal as a division was set up in 1920 under Great Indian Peninsula Co. (G.I.P.) Railways with its Jurisdiction extended from Igatpuri to Itarsi towards Jubbalpore direction and Badnera towards Nagpur direction ) became an important centre having a sizeable European population and infrastructure comprising a handsome station [Bhusawal Railway Station building with single platform was constructed in 1860 (which is the existing Up-platform and Station Manager’s Office).   The other platform at Bhusawal was constructed much later in 1911.], Locomotive Workshop and houses for employees.  In fact, it became a town were railway employees settled down after retirement.  While Bhusawal Division had steam loco sheds located at Bhusawal, Itarsi, Badnera, Nandgaon, Igatpuri, Khandwa and Akola, it  was only at Bhusawal Loco Shed (Steam Loco Shed at Bhusawal was set up in 1919, which was then the largest loco shed in Asia and third largest in the world) where a Black Beauty Competition used to be arranged to adjudge the most clean and well maintained steam engine.   Steam engines from all divisions of Central Railway had to compete and only the best engine and the best driver nominated for working a particular engine were given prizes by the Chief Mechanical Engineer, Central Railway.  This competition was quite an event as it would wake up this hamlet and all the Railway employees alongwith their family members and friends as well as the public would throng to make the function a memorable success.
